If you're not a movie star or a supermodel, getting a professional headshot might seem daunting. But don't worry, in this blog post, we'll share some helpful tips to prepare you for your session. We'll cover how to communicate effectively with your photographer, plan your shoot day, select the right attire and accessories, and achieve the best possible results. Let's dive in!

1. How should I prepare for a professional headshot?

We all know that when you're getting ready for a professional headshot session, it's important to have your outfit and makeup ready. But there are plenty of other factors you should consider as well. In this blog post, we'll walk through some of the best ways to prepare for your shoot and give you some tips for how to get the most out of the experience.

2. Communication is key

  • Communicate clearly with your photographer.

  • Let him/her know what you are looking for in a headshot, and be specific about what you want. If you have any special requests or needs, let them know!

  • Give them a list of references that show their work so they can get an idea of how you like to look photographed.

3. Plan your shoot day

It's important to remember that a professional headshot session is much more than just a photo. It's an opportunity for you to showcase your personality, highlight your strengths and show off how exceptional you are. During the shoot day itself, it’s important to be prepared so that you can focus on saying hello to the camera rather than worrying about what clothes or accessories could work best in front of it. That’s why we recommend planning ahead by choosing a time and date as close as possible to when you’ll need these photos—and make sure that whatever day works best fits with your schedule (that means no last-minute trips). The following steps will help ensure that all goes according to plan:

4. What to wear & accessories

  • Wear clothing that flatters your body type. A good headshot should show who you are and what you do, not what brand names you wear or how much money you have to spend on clothes. Choose clothing that makes the best of your figure and hides any physical flaws.

  • Avoid clothing with logos, patterns or other distracting details. Your headshot should be a simple representation of who you are as an individual—not a billboard for every company or cause that has ever hired you to work on their projects!

  • Wear clothing that is comfortable and flattering (and appropriate). You want this experience to be fun and relaxed, so don't pick anything too tight or loose-fitting; try not to wear something with heavy zippers either; they can be distracting in photos!

5. What to bring with you

Here are a few items you should consider bringing with you to your session.

TOPS

  • Two no pattern / solid tops

  • One pattern / design top

BUSINESS PROPS

  • Related to your industry: book, keys, microphone, laptop, iPad ect..

SUITS / DRESSES

  • Fitted suit and / or business jacket

  • 2 fitted dresses

  • Industry related uniform

ACCESSORIES

  • Scarves

  • Tie

  • Sunglasses

JEWELRY

  • Bring assortment of earrings, necklace, ring / bracelets, cufflinks.

MAKEUP

  • Signature Lip color-if you have one

  • Special makeup (sensitive skin)

  • Chap-stick (especially for men)

The best headshots begin with preparation.

Just like any other type of photo session, you’ll want to take the time to think ahead and plan out what you will wear for your professional headshot session. Even if you have several outfits picked out, it’s best not to bring them all on the day of your shoot since we can only photograph one outfit at a time!

It is also important that you prepare in advance for any special considerations that might be necessary during your shoot. For example: if makeup or hair styling is needed, let us know as soon as possible so we can schedule those appointments around yours. If there is anything else specific that would make our job easier (such as bringing water), let us know about this too! The more information we have on hand before meeting up, the better prepared we will be for capturing great images together!
